What is HUMSS all about?

It is a strand in academic track stands for Humanities and Social Sciences. This strand focuses on the study of human behavior and societal changes, and analysis of arts, culture, literature, and politics. It involves political science, anthropology, linguistics, psychology, and communication.

Here are the 10 common vocabulary that I usually hear and use.

1. Behavior

 Definition:

Behavior is the actions and mannerisms made by individuals, organisms, systems or artificial entities in conjunction with themselves or their environment, which includes the other systems or organisms around as well as the (inanimate) physical environment.


Example in Sentence:

Behavior is a mirror in which everyone shows his image.

2. Communication

 Definition:

Communication is the transmission of the message from sender to recipient can be affected by a huge range of things. These include our emotions, the cultural situation, the medium used to communicate, and even our location. 


Example in Sentence:

Television is an effective means of communication.

3. Community

 Definition:

Community is a social unit (a group of living things) with commonality such as norms, religion, values, customs, or identity. Communities may share a sense of place situated in a given geographical area (e.g. a country, village, town, or neighbourhood) or in virtual space through communication platforms.


Example in Sentence:

We have many cultures in our community.

4. Culture

 Definition:

Culture is the characteristics and knowledge of a particular group of people, encompassing language, religion, cuisine, social habits, music and arts.


Example in Sentence:

A great chapter in the history of culture is filled by the influence of translations of the Bible.

5. Government

 Definition:

Government, the political system by which a country or community is administered and regulated.


Example in Sentence:

The government has been slow to react to the crisis. 

6. History

 Definition:

History is the study of change over time, and it covers all aspects of human society. Political, social, economic, scientific, technological, medical, cultural, intellectual, religious and military developments


Example in Sentence:

History is the life of nations and of humanity.

7. Law

 Definition:

Law is a rule or set of rules, enforceable by the courts, regulating the government of a state, the relationship between the organs of government and the subjects of the state, and the relationship or conduct of subjects towards each other.


Example in Sentence:

The copyright laws of the place where you are located also govern what you can do with this work.

8. Literature

 Definition:

Literature broadly is any collection of written work, but it is also used more narrowly for writings specifically considered to be an art form, especially prose fiction, drama, and poetry. In recent centuries, the definition has expanded to include oral literature, much of which has been transcribed.


Example in Sentence:

She took courses in history and literature. 

9. Politics

 Definition:

Politics are the actions or activities concerned with achieving and using power in a country or society.


Example in Sentence:

The key question in British politics was how long the prime minister could survive.

10. Religion

 Definition:

Religion is a set of beliefs concerning the cause, nature, and purpose of the universe, especially when considered as the creation of a superhuman agency or agencies, usually involving devotional and ritual observances, and often containing a moral code governing the conduct of human affairs.


Example in Sentence:

The woman wasn’t a fan of organized religion, but she did believe that a higher power has a plan for us all.
